Morning Coffee Thoughts #1

I love my morning coffee and I still love to read the physical newspaper, especially on the weekend.  However, I am indignant this morning over the morning coffee and newspapers.  As soon as it was reported last week that the lawyer for the three accused in the brutal bus rape and murder of a 23 year old woman in India last month would plead not guilty, I knew nothing good was going to come of this.  In spite of India being on the verge of massive social change with the new generation, old attitudes seem to prevail.

These quotes are from an article written by Raveena Aulakh, a Toronto Star Reporter (“Indian Officials  Make Excuses for Rape”,  Toronto Star, Saturday, January 12, 2013 p.A4)  – the men making these statements are part of what we would call respected society.

“To my understanding consumption of fast food contributes to such incidents.  Chow mein leads to hormonal imbalance evoking an urge to indulge in such acts”. – Jitendar Chattar, leader of a panchayat, or local governing council.

“Co-education should be abolished and proper education facilities meant exclusively for women should be available at all levels of education.  Educational institutions should prescribe sober and dignified dress for girls”  Jamaat-E-Islami Hind, an Islamist organization.

The lawyer for the three accused stated that the male companion of the girl was responsible because the two shouldn’t have been out at night…”Until today I have not seen a single incident or example of rape with a respected lady”.

“Then there was a member of Parliament, Rajpal Saini, who wondered why housewives and schoolgirls need mobile phones. ” It encourages them to make futile small talk and get connected with people outside their homes,” Reuters reported.”

Are you kidding me?  I don’t know which one is my favourite – the one about the fast food or the cell phones.

Friends, be aware today and speak out to your brothers, fathers, husbands, sons about women’s rights.
