Market Day

Thursday is Farmer’s Market Day in Lunenburg.  If you want great local produce, meats, fish, artisanal products, or just plain gossip, this is the place to be on a Thursday morning.

There’s  great folk music.

These were my takings from this week’ s market.

My special treat to myself is this  maple syrup infused with lavender and chai.  Produced by Hutchinson’s Farm in the Annapolis Valley, it is recommended to sweeten tea, coffee or to drizzle over salad.  I might just swig it straight from the bottle.  (And yes, those are local blueberries.)

  1. Yum yum! What are the little round green things next to the peaches?

    • Those are tomatilloes. Inside the papery husk is a round green fruit like a tomato. They are the basis of all green sauces common to Latin American cooking, especially Mexican. They are fairly tart or spicy in flavour. I didn’t know what they were either, but they look really neat. Apparently when you pick them you have to gently feel the husk to get a sense of the size of the fruit inside to determine whether it is ready or not. Thanks for asking!
